If you’re concerned newer more regal fabrics like velvet, lace and tweed will still look make you look more thirties than twenties, you can still look eclectic-chic by matching new pieces with your favorite over-stated Boho belts and jewelry. If you’re still worried about shifting from fun and flirty to dark and serious, mix fabrics to achieve an even more eclectic look: there are NO rules this season about mixing tweeds and velvet or brocades with lace. We messed up. When we err, we need to admit it and move to correct the wrong. Black folks have been complaining about BET programming for ages when, in actuality, they’ve been checking it out on the “down low.”
Listening to the negativity over the years, even I was shocked to find out there were so many closet watchers secretly hooked on BET Nightly News. I’ve gotten calls and emails from people all over the country upset about BET’s decision to cancel the program. Many of them say that BET is their only real connection to the Black community, and, for many organizations it is often the only TV coverage they receive.
It’s not just the over 40 crew tuning in each night for an update on what’s happening in Black America, young people of all nationalities are aware of current events in the Black world thanks to BET Nightly News.
After constant criticism of BET programming, the Black community was incensed when Robert Johnson made a savvy business move and sold the company to Viacom. As many people predicted, the nightly newscast hit the chopping block.
If we do not want all of Black media to fold or get sucked up by mainstream conglomerates, we must recognize that news is a product governed by the laws of supply and demand. The more we watch our own news, read and subscribe to our print publications and praise the work, the more that business can flourish.
Since slavery Black publications have been consistent advocates in our community and are still the first people called when there’s a problem. Unless it’s celebrity driven or blood ridden, mainstream press does not address our issues until there’s sufficient buzz created in the Black press.
For example, recently several stories appeared in the Black press about the lack of concern for missing Black women. Those stories resulted in coverage in mainstream media including USA Today. And, no one can deny the impact George Curry’s article on Kemba Smith had on her case and the criminal justice system as a whole.
For those of you who believe Black media has out-lived its usefulness, Richard Prince’s Journal-isms recently reported that The New York Times Co. is starting a Black newspaper in Gainesville, Fla. I’m not mad at the New York Times for their efforts to increase revenue by targeting the Black market; I’m sad that we do not recognize our own value and repeatedly take our struggling media institutions for granted.
There are Black publications - like the 100 year-old Chicago Defender - that have served as the voice of the community for years. Among those already in Florida are the Broward Times, Weekly Challenger, Westside Gazette, and Jacksonville Advocate; why would New York Times start their own Black newspaper in Florida?
Here’s a clue. Katherine Stapp of Inter Press Service recently reported that the first nationwide assessment of foreign-language and other ethnic media found that ethnic radio, television and newspapers in the United States now reach 64 million people. However, the article adds, Sandy Close of New California Media says “only three to four percent of the 145 billion dollars spent on U.S. advertising goes to ethnic media.” With these figures we can expect to see more profit-oriented mainstream publishers setting up shop to get a piece of the lucrative “ethnic” market.
One might mention the quality factor. It is true that budget limitations prevent Black media from providing the glitz and glamour comparable to that of mainstream press. Don’t criticize, take action.
Start by subscribing to a Black publication today. If your cable station does not offer TV One or the Black Family Channel, make a request to your cable provider. If they don’t respond, this is your opportunity to complain. For those of you with, or in charge of advertising budgets, make sure Black media is a major line item in your campaign. We need to be proactive, not reactive.
What if public relations professionals would not service Black media if a client only spent adverting dollars with mainstream? What if, instead of refusing interviews with Black press, publicists granted exclusives to Black media for A-list clients? Imagine the impact if Will & Jada, Denzel, Halle, Jamie, Usher, Nelson, and Rev. Al only spoke with Black Media. Blacks are a driving force internationally, leveraging our power for just one week would position Black media across the globe. It’s time for Black America to put up or shut up.
As the end nears for BET Nightly News I urge you to stop complaining and take a minute to plead the case for the newscast. If you would like to see BET continue to provide their excellent coverage of Black news and events send a note to BET explaining why it is important to keep the show on the air. Email, fax, or send your message in a bottle, but let them know that we do support the work that BET is doing for the community. For those who don’t watch the newscast, stand up for those who do.
The “look what they did to us now” approach is ineffective in the new millennium. It’s time for Black folks to come out the closet and demonstrate a little “Black Pride.”

Where do we go when we die, Is there something there we cant perceive, Maybe others would not have to cry, If they saw just what can be achieved, They say some religions see us weighted, Like a deep sea diver whilst alive, And that afterwards we are liberated, And light enough to float accross the skies. Perhaps if mourners could once see, We pass from pain and age and endless toil, Onwards to a state of pure tranquility, And not just burned or interred under the soil. Perhaps accepted means of disposal are harsh, In relation to our true form and destination, Perhaps really down here we flounder in a marsh, Wheras afterwards we are but free sensation. Most visions of near death encounters, Only mention painless progress towards light, So when it eventually seeks to surmount us, Why fear darkness or endless night. Those left behind have the hardest task, To try to make sense of what is gone, To accept we arent there any more to ask, To realise our last glimmerings have shone, I treasure my friends in flashback memories, Often jolted into view causing a tear, I cant understand just where theyve gone, And why they are not still here, It seems inconceivable they werent spared, I wish Id said more when they breathed, But I just hope they know I cared, Even though I dont know why they had to leave. I know in part some of my heart, Wonders, through their untimely parting, When my own final fate will start, And realisation is soon darting, That one day, someday, it will be me, That others will see instead of them, That it will inevitably finally be, That I join the ranks of mortal men.
Perhaps they sense me now and feel pity, That I have to struggle on on earth, Whilst they live in enlightened cities, Lit by happiness and filled with mirth, Maybe hell is here and now and grieving, And heaven is where you go when you die, Maybe we should be happy at their leaving, Maybe they look at US and want to cry. Whatever the truth after our youth, Fades away until the end of days, We shouldnt waste forever seeking truth, Shouldnt ever analyse lifes tragic ways, Surely if they can see you and me, They would reach down and dry our eyes, They would want us to be happy again, And not wander forever traumatised, If you were they and saw the way, You seemed to them way down below, You would want to reluctantly say, I must move on even though I know, That Ill never ever hear their voice, Never see them and never touch their face, For its what would be their choice, If they could only tinker with our fate. It wont happen in just an hour, Or just a day or just a year, But one day it will sit easier, Even though you are never here. You were my friend at lifes end, No one can take that away from me, And no one will ever quite transcend, What you will always mean to me, But I understand that now its planned, A new chapter starts as this one ends, And I wont actually be eternally damned, If I make new aquaintances and friends, Ill not forget all those close Ive met, And all the times and tides we shared, And Ill often wonder why they went, And why it was that I was spared, But I owe it to their memories gone, To not cause them grief if they can see, And to try to pick up and soldier on, And show them the person that was me, For if they see the world through my medium, Im sure they would much rather see, A world not wrapped in tedium, And all grief finally set free. Its not forsaking memories of the past, To move forwards towards new light, Its what they would want if asked, Its what they would see as right, They know you will always think on, They know you will always care, They know because they havnt gone Because they are always there, Maybe they cant communicate as such, Maybe they seem lost except in dreams, But they still care about you just as much, From behind seemingly invisible screens, And they would wish you happiness, They would want you to laugh out loud, They would gaze with tenderness, And they could be only proud, If they saw your internal war, Disappear forever without a trace, And all the grief from before, Become a smile upon your face. For you cant undo whats been done, However unfair it seemed, It can happen to anyone, And to any of our dreams, You cant turn back the tide, You can just sink or survive, They are still there inside, As long as you are alive, Theres no guilt in being content, No shame in living life again, No need explaining what is meant, No need to prolong the pain, They would say so if they could speak They would write it if allowed, They dont want you to be meek They dont want you to be cowed, They just want you as you were Before fate threw its tumbling dice Before everything became a blur And when everything was nice. They just want to turn your clock, On to a better time and place, So you emerge from out of shock, With a calm and happy face.
What was oblivion and apocalypse, Beyond imagination or belief, Has transmuted to a flock of ships, Sailing on a sea of abject grief, Who, battered by constant stormy rancour, And often seemingly lost or destroyed, Are now tranquilly at anchor, And peacefully deployed. Their hulls retain the knocks, And their sails the rents of rage, But they overcame the rocks, And they finally came of age, Now they know the ebb and flow, And the tempest out of naught, The better armed with what they know, with all that they have been taught, Their old crew missing a few, Not lost just out of sight, So they have recruited anew, To set the final balance right, Until the day they sail away, Never returning to these shores, They will be cast as unsurpassed, And be legendary for evermore, For not bowing to the strain, For fighting forward though sorely harmed, For acknowledging life is often pain, And that we arent all charmed, For coming out the other side, When it was easier to fall, It makes them worthy of our pride, It makes them victors after all.
Life.
While we breathe we must believe We are here for some purpose in some plan Surely there must be lasting meaning In the intelligence and love of man. We often wonder why were all doomed to die Just when we become calm and wise And ponder anew what will we do When we finally close our eyes Why are we here, it is not clear, And if nihil and darkness is our fate Why do we strive with endless drive With only nothingness lying in wait Where are those dear who were so near One can almost feel them still As if energy waves from beyond the graves Keep them constant in our will Maybe all survives, for all our lives In a constant energy flux And sometimes were bees sometimes leaves And sometimes we are us. If mass is energy born in a different form Maybe we are constantly changing guise And we do not pass on were just there and gone But now beyond ears and eyes There seems little chance such a complex dance As the human body and the mind Was randomly formed over all And evolved to what we find Impossible to suppose that when life goes It all meant nothing and is wasted Why then are we such complexity What of the dreams weve tasted What of love, being hand in glove What of friends and never parting What reason for our seasons What point in ever starting I think we subscribe until we die To a vast knowlege base building on Then we change clothes and the old life goes But our energy is never gone It transforms anew to me or you Becomes different but the same And what we learned is surely burned In an archive with our name. So after all whether big or small We all contribute in our own way To the greater knowledge of everyone From the experiences of our days, So maybe we will always be Just in a different suit or gown Meeting again later due to nature Cycling up and cycling down. Its the spark that is our heart And makes us all what we seem And it always fires, never tires An endless energetic dream. So dont think of me as ceased to be Dont call me dead and gone Im still alive beyond your eyes My energy simply carries on You may not hear me with your ear You may not see me whole But im still me always will be Its what you call my soul, So when breath dies with death And my eyes finally close Im not passed away will not decay Im just in different clothes.

Astrology has been with us since our earliest known history. The concept of astrology, which is that life is affected by the heavens, is rooted in mankind’s desire to understand the universe. New life in the spring and decline in autumn are clearly related to the positioning of the sun, so it would be conceivable that other heavenly bodies had their influence on us as well.
Many of the planets are visible to the naked eye. Stars form patterns that move about the sky in a regular formation. Back in the beginning of time, early men would watch the heavenly bodies in their movements and speculate at what it might all mean, and so began the study of astrology!
There are different ways that astrology is believed to affect us. It is thought that the twelve signs of the Zodiac are tied to twelve different parts of the body, and treatment for medical problem can therefore be aided through the knowledge of astronomy. One of the most widely held beliefs in astronomy is that the position of the stars at the time of a child’s birth will influence the child’s life. “Thank you.” So good to hear. So simple to say. So, why are so many folks longing to hear it?
There is little that goes further towards improving relationships than a genuine ‘Thank you.” You know that. Why, then, do so many folks have difficulty with it?
Are we moving too quickly to notice what others do for us? Do we just expect so much that we fail to acknowledge the little things? Is there some small part of us that refuses to give what we’re not getting?
You have probably heard “It’s part of your/his/her job. It’s your responsibility. ” Sure, it may be. Does that mean that it does not deserve acknowledgment? You can bet it would be acknowledged if it was not done!
At home, we often take each other for granted. We ‘expect’. We say things like, “If you really loved me, you would _______.” Those are expectations delivered in a bartering mode. Where is the appreciation for what they do? Do you expect that the garbage will go out or the dishes will be put away? Why? Because it’s their job? How about saying ‘Thank you’? Everyone likes recognition for the things they do. It’s a very easy habit to acquire.
Ever lived with teenagers? The easiest way to engage them is to catch them doing something right. That means saying ‘Thank you’ when they do it, too. If you think this is too easy, try it for a month. Tell them what you see that you like, what you like about what they are doing/wearing/thinking. Forget about adding anything about what you don’t like. You’ll see the relationship change positively. Still sound too easy? Try it!
Simply look and you’ll find many things each day worthy of acknowledgment. Stop and appreciate what IS being done for you…and, say so.
William James, the great American psychologist, said, “The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” Is there a part of you that longs to be seen, recognized and acknowledged? Every person feels better when they are appreciated.
Let’s not be too busy, or too important, to stop, see, and acknowledge the contributions of others. And, once is not enough. Each time the garbage is taken out or the report is handed in, each time they bring you coffee or extend themselves on your behalf, say ‘Thank you’.
There is another side to appreciation. It is equally as important as recognition. William James calls it wisdom. He says, “The art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook.” Ah! That’s worth thinking about, isn’t it?
Do you know what to overlook and when to overlook it? That can only happen when you step outside of yourself, your needs and wants, and see another person wholly. When you can calibrate what is most important at any given moment in a relationship, you are very wise.
Often, when I am working with workplace teams, conflict is worst when folks do not know what to overlook. When tempers flare and approaches differ, nitpicking escalates. When deadlines loom and funding fails, fingers point. A wise person takes a step back and looks at the whole picture. What is happening here? What do we want to happen? What outcomes do we want this exchange to create? This is the time to focus on appreciation and follow it with team problem-solving.
The same is true in all relationships. If things are getting tense, reflect on the last time you felt appreciated. More importantly, when was the last time you found something to appreciate in another? This could well be at the bottom of the anger, frustration, fear or hurt that you are feeling. You can fix this with good communication and assertion skills.
Start with yourself. Give first. Demanding to receive when the other person is feeling empty will only escalate the negatives. Whoever is most sane at the moment in any relationship is the one responsible for that relationship. Let that be you.
Appreciation is never wasted. Find things to acknowledge. Notice what others do well. Catch them doing things right. Notice what others do for you. Offer your thanks. You’ll feel better. And, very soon, it will come back to you. I promise.
