Creating an Action Plan

So you’ve bought into the idea that you need to live life on purpose. You have an intention; you have goals. You know what you want life to be like five or ten years from now. But taking that first step to make it happen is daunting. Try this.

Look at the big picture and then break it apart like a jigsaw puzzle. Some things you want may be already in place–a loving spouse, a beautiful home, a promising career. Set those aside in a “maintenance” area. Then separate the rest of the puzzle into action steps that you can take, like stepping stones, to fill in the missing pieces and reach the result you desire. You want the “yet to be accomplished” items in small pieces that you can see are doable. Even if you don’t know everything that needs to be done, start now.

List everything you can think of that will have to be done to bring each piece of the puzzle into fruition–to make it real. This will help you decide which ones to work on first. For instance, one of the pieces might be: “Get a degree.” Some things in your action plan might be:

1. Talk with someone in Human Resources where you work to see if the company will pay for any courses.

2. Get college catalogs.

3. Talk with a counselor to set up a program. What are the required courses and when are they offered? Can any work experience count for college credit to shorten the classroom time?

4. Get family support. Talk with your spouse, if any, about this new outside activity to gain support. What will it take in class and study time? What will you and the family gain from this activity? What if there is resistance? You need a contingency plan. Drill down. If your spouse refuses to cooperate, what are the alternatives?

Classes during work hours

Correspondence courses

Courses on the Internet for credit

Delay start of courses

You have choices. Sort out your alternatives. Know your options. As you show that you are determined and will not neglect your family responsibilities, chances are that the spouse’s attitude will soften. While they may still withhold full support, they may make some concessions.

At this point, you are trying to better define what needs to be done and when. If there are any shortcuts, now is the time to uncover them. You won’t know everything that will need to be done. That’s okay. Your list will change and grow as you learn more. Just find the first step and take it.

Tips for High School Teachers with ADHD Students: Increasing Time Focused to a Task

Thank you to all of our professional educators who dedicate themselves to our children! We know how difficult it can be working with ADHD children, so here are your teacher tips for the week, brought to you by the ADHD Information Library and ADDinSchool.com. This is a sampling of over 500 classroom interventions for your use at http://www.ADDinSchool.com.

Here are some tips on increasing your ADHD student’s time on task. Remember, the best interventions are the ones that will help all of your students be more successful, not just the ADHD students.

One of main characteristics of students with ADD ADHD is the difficulty with sustaining attention on tasks over time. In other words, they get bored very easily, even by you.

Promote time on task, never time off task. Take time to catch the student being on task and working hard. Reward him with a simple smile or pat on the back. If you do this consistently, you will see his attention span, or time on task, increase throughout the school year, making your life easier in the long run.

Your ADD ADHD student will respond better to situations that he finds stimulating and engaging. Varying the instructional medium and pace will help sustain the attention deficit student’s interest.

Your ADD ADHD student would probably find lessons that emphasize “hands-on” activities highly engaging. Keeping the time required for sustained attention to a task balanced with more active learning will improve your attention deficit student’s performance. Changes in instructor’s voice level and variation in word-pacing will also increase his attention during instruction.

Break long tasks into a series of shorter “sprints.” Give a minute timer to keep on his desk. Ask the attention deficit student how long he thinks it would take to perform a certain task. Let him set his own time and race against the timer.

Stress accuracy instead of quantity of work. Mastery of a subject is really what you want as a teacher anyway.

Computers are great for 1 on 1 work and immediate feedback.

Students using medication to treat attention deficit disorder will have their optimal attention effects for methylphenidate (Ritalin) 45 minutes to 2 1/2 hours after medication. Other medications differ, and it is best to check with the physician about the time of maximum medication effects. If possible, it is best to schedule the most attention-demanding tasks for the ADD ADHD student during this medication window.

Combine your verbal directions along with illustrations or demonstrations of what you want your students to do. The more ways you use to describe what you want your ADD ADHD students to do, the greater likelihood that they will actually do it.

Your attention deficit student will be more successful when given directions one step at a time. When a series of instructions are given, retention beyond the first direction is difficult. Minor adjustments on the part of the teacher in giving directions will help the ADD or ADHD student a great deal.

Hopefully these will help the ADHD students in your classroom to be more successful. You can learn more about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder at the ADHD Information Library.

The Clutter Factor: From Packrativity to Productivity

• Are you embarrassed when you walk into your home or office?
• Do you frequently run out of space?
• Is your desk piled high with UPO’s (unidentified piled objects)?
• Are you frustrated by the amount of time you spend looking for things?

If so, you’re not alone! Research shows the average person spends 150 hours per year looking for misplaced information, while eight out of ten people have at least one area of their home or office they would prefer that no one ever see!

The word “clutter” comes from the same root word as “clot”. Webster’s Dictionary defines it as “to run in disorder, to fill or cover with scattered or disordered things that impede movement or reduce effectiveness.”

Clutter affects our society at every level - our personal lives, our families, our work, our businesses, and the world in general. It seems easy enough to eliminate - just throw it away. If that were true, more people would do it. So what’s the problem?

Frequently clutter is an emotional issue. Ironically, many of us have clutter because we were forced to give us something we considered valuable earlier in our lives, and now we can’t even get rid of the junk in our lives. People who lived through The Great Depression, for example, cling to every minute object in the extreme fear that someday they might need it. A 25-year-old man, describing his home in which no friends or family had been for months wept as he recalled the death of his mother when he was four. A woman who shared her bedroom with four sisters at the age of eight now hangs on with desperation to everything that comes in her space at the age of 80. A gentleman shared that the dates of his clutter began the year he retired. Slums are filled with junk. The poorer we are - in body or spirit — the more we hang on: “It might be useful some day.” The irony is that the more we hang on to what is not useful, the less room there is in our lives for those things which encourage us to be productive!

After spending 20+ years in the homes and offices of America, I have concluded that there are five components to a clutter- controlled environment:

1. Vision. It is impossible to even define our own clutter if we do not hold a clear picture of who we are, or what we are about. A photographer had on-going dreams about living in a tall, white tower with glass windows, while her real home was buried in clutter accumulated over 30+ years. When we focused on her love of the arts and what was aesthetically beautiful, letting go of the unsightly clutter became less painful, and even freeing.

2. Attitude. A book agent discussing the idea of a book on the subject of clutter commented, “Some of us are just slobs.” Only if you want to be. Creating a pleasing and productive environment requires a process. If you honor the process, you will succeed.

3. Time. “How long is this going to take and how much is it going to cost?” is the first question asked by potential clients. My answer: “It doesn’t really matter, but the longer you wait, the longer it’s going to take and the more it’s going to cost.”

4. Tools. Growing up on a farm in Nebraska, my father taught me “Half of any job is having the right tool.” The amount of effort required to control the clutter in your environment is directly related to the tools you use. One woman eliminated her struggle with scraps of paper on which she had scribbled phone numbers and appointments when she discovered that the only thing that mattered to her about her calendar was that it was beautiful.

5. Preservation. People often say, “Oh I can get organized. I just can’t maintain it.” Clients have taught me that if they can’t maintain the environment we create with relative ease, we have to return to the one or more of the first four steps.

Your ability to enjoy your life, or to accomplish any task or goal is directly related to your ability to create and sustain a productive environment in which you can live and work.

Enlightening Your Internal Environment: Breathing Room

Some of us live as if the hounds of hell themselves were nipping at our heels - and many will attest that that’s precisely what it feels like at times. De-stressing, relaxing, refocusing and other methods of relieving the pressure are vital for our survival, unless we aspire to end up in a hospital bed recovering from a heart attack or a stroke before we reach retirement age. Check out these ideas and see if they don’t offer some relief from the hectic pace or everyday life:

1. Create a library of soothing and restorative music and purchase as quality a set of headphones as you can manage (scrimp a little elsewhere and buy the best - it’s definitely worth it). Take some time each day to simply disappear into the music and block out all the worries and tensions of the day. Although it may be hard at first, keep at it. Eventually your body will train itself to this new “coffee break” and start to get fidgety if you run late.

2. Learn to create a reserve of time, money, availability and anything else that makes you crazy. When you have enough savings to buffer you against bad times and unexpected expenses, you spend less energy dealing with them. Likewise, if you block out times in your appointment book just for you (mark them in ink and make them as sacrosanct as a client meeting!), you will find yourself breathing easy rather than catching your breath as you move throughout your day - and surprisingly at first, you will accomplish as much if not more with less effort. A harried mind is never a productive one.

3. Learn to chill out, to truly rest. Train yourself to nap, take an afternoon stroll, lounge about on your day off - all without guilt, worrying about your work or what you’re not doing, or otherwise not being present in your moment of peace. This may take some time, but the effort will repay you many times in better mental and physical health, an easier personality and a more even mood. Not to mention the fact that your family will actually be able to pick you out of a line-up for a change.

4. Go for walks in natural settings to let the peace and the power of nature “reset” your internal clock. Don’t do anything but walk - don’t “exercise” or otherwise alter your natural stride, don’t fret or worry and don’t set an agenda or destination. Just walk and observe and take in the calming surroundings. It’s surprising how many of us have lost this vital skill of just going for a walk with no other intention in mind.

5. Create and strictly abide by your own Sabbath, in whatever way works for you. Choose a day that fits your beliefs, your schedule and your life and do everything you can to set it aside for rest, relaxation, rejuvenation and reflection. Precook meals so that they just need to be popped into the microwave (or make a Crockpot of stew or chili or roast and leave it on low all day). Refuse to schedule anything that is not restorative or enjoyable in nature - no doctor’s appointments or official business. Turn the ringer off on the phone and shut off or do not turn on the computer (Gasp - did I say that? Don’t worry, you’ll live. Trust me). You might even experiment with a TV-free Sabbath, although that might be just a little too much to ask of many of us. Take a day and make it holy - it will soak through into other parts of your life like the spreading fragrance from a perfect flower.

Creating space - space to grow, space to move, space to breath - helps keep us from stifling the very life energy that makes us who we are. Too often we get wrapped up so tightly in the bonds of day-to-day life that we forget how easily and how quickly they come undone, if only we take the time to do so.

Lies kill hearts

One who speaks a lie hurts. Only truth gives life and peace. A lie always hurts. Even the smallest lie hurts. It hurts one to whom the lie has been spoken, and surely the person who speaks the lie. In today’s world lies are taken as way of life. Those who speak lies, bury morality so deep down somewhere, that no one can find it. These people with black hearts speak lies and sometimes they lie to the extent that it kills one who believes them.

Speaking a lie is betraying trust. To speak a falsehood to one who believes that truth is being spoken, is sinful. Society may not punish liars, but there is the law of karma, that punishes the liar. But what of the pain that a liar gives to one who trusted her/him?

Lies come in many types. Let us first try to find out about what kinds of liars are there on this earth. The first type is a small liar. A poor person, who speaks lies to survive in this brutal world. On the other end, we have liars who rule the nations. For their own power, they invent all kinds of lies and mislead people to believe the untruth.

The worst liars are those who lie to someone who has total trust in her/him. A child always takes the word of mother or father as the truth. The child has total trust in the words and takes them as the gospel truth. But as the child grows up, he/she realizes that his/her parent speak lies whenever they find it convenient. The child gets trained at this stage of life. Though the child learns about speaking truth in the text books, what he/she finds in the reality of role models, is different. And that reality is followed. This habit of speaking lies perpetuates in this fashion.

One more type of liar is the lover. Love depends on trust and nothing but total trust. When a lover speaks lies, that not only breaks the trust, but it also kills the hearts. It kills the man/woman to whom the lie is spoken. These lovers are smooth liars. They think that by speaking lies they will save the love, but they manage to destroy not only the love, but also their beloved. They poison the life of their beloved with lies and are nothing short of murderers and killers.

As I said before, society may not punish such liars, because society is not concerned with the depth of such relationships. But what of Karma, as the Indian philosophy calls it? That leaves no one. Only the law of karma gives the punishment to the liar. The liar gets punished by the law of karma. Who will save the person who trusted the liar? Only the mercy of God can save such a battered person.

New Ericsson Mobile Broadband Module Promises Big Things

Swedish Telecoms company Ericsson have had a busy week - as well as gearing up to demo super-fast 56MB HSPA at CTIA Wireless Exhibition in Las Vegas next month, the folks there have also been developing a new mobile broadband module, which is capable of connecting laptops to HSPA, GPRS and EDGE networks.

The new module has three key features which make it particularly news-worthy; support for the new Windows 7 operating system, fifty per cent less power demands compared with the previous version, and a “wake-on wireless” feature which means that users can wake the laptop from sleep mode remotely.

It is this this wake-on wireless which is particularly key, as it integrates with Intel’s Anti-Theft PC Protection technology, allowing the anti-theft module to be remotely activated if the machine is stolen, and enabling security updates to be sent to it. Combined with GPS technology, this smart little pairing means that stolen machines can be disabled, rendering them useless to a thief, and tracked, to improve chances of recovery - all utilising mobile broadband.

The chip will be available to PC manufacturers in June this year, and Jan Backman, a director of marketing with Ericsson, says he expects devices with embedded modules to be on shelves by midway through the second half of this year. Dell, LG and Toshiba are all said to be planning to use the new module in notebooks.

Bankruptcy versus Foreclosure

Often times, people have to opt between filing for bankruptcy or allowing their home loan lender to foreclose their house. If monthly or bi-weekly house payments are not received on schedule, the financial institution may file a foreclosure on the property. The only guaranteed way to stop this from occurring is to pay the mortgage lender as scheduled. It is the very same for everybody who has not been able to pay their home loan; the bank will foreclose on the loan. Home loans are very much like auto loans, if you can not pay your payments you invariably will have it repossessed.

Bankruptcy is a legal action filed by a person who is not able to pay her debts as agreed. Once filed, all current civil legal proceedings connected to the home loan will be stopped. Legally, a home loan lender has to cease all collection processes, including foreclosure. But, a mortgage company might be given a break from the required stay, and once it is granted, can continue with the foreclosure action. Filing for Bankruptcy will not halt foreclosure and you still must pay back your loan. Going into bankruptcy only makes the foreclosure proceedings proceed more slowly, it does not solve the underlying problems.

While bankruptcy does not permanently end foreclosure, it could give an individual time to pay back the over due or at least it does make it tiny bit easier to pay back the home loan lender. Bankruptcy laws requires a home loan lender to suspend a foreclosure action, a home owner has a little time to produce the money to pay the lender. Bankruptcy is the final fall back for all home owners. Eventually this will happen when she is totally incapable of paying their creditor’s minimum commitments. Under bankruptcy, some unsecured debts will likely be discharged but the real estate loan will remain. The borrower must be willing to pay back the home loan inside the allotted time frame as the debt is secured by assets. Additionally, Chapter 13 insolvency has a schedule of payments that is adjudicated by the court, and allows the borrower make payments on his home loan to get caught up on their mortgage payments.

It is not everybody qualifies for insolvency and unfortunately if they do qualify, there are legal fees. It may cost the borrower more in legal fees than if they were to just knuckle down and pay the late home loan payments. If you are thinking that declaring bankruptcy can help to solve the situation, a bankruptcy attorney will likely be capable of answering any questions you have. Simply put, insolvency proceedings are very complicated and detailed, house owner really should not seek to do it without guidance from a a lawyer.

This article is just standard information. This is not legal advice. We do not make representation that this is legal advice. You may need to contact a bankruptcy lawyer in your particular state with any questions.
