5 Ways to Generate Leads with Your Web Site

If you sell services one of the biggest challenges is identifying qualified prospects who want what you have to offer and are ready to buy. It is possible to waste time on cold calls and other marketing activities that turn up little in the way of sales. Wouldn’t you rather have a steady stream of hot leads, leads that not only include contact information but give you an idea of what the prospect needs, the problem they want solved?

You have a web site, and hundreds if not thousands of people visit your site each week. If you use a free giveaway and the briefest of sign up forms to get people to give you their email information you can market to prospects but wouldn’t it be helpful to have more information?

Use an autoresponder to send people a confirmation when they request your free article or sign up for your newsletter. In the email ask them for detailed contact information and ask them a couple of questions about what they’re interested in.

3. Get People to Tell You How You Can Help Them

Many people use the web as tool to find solutions and to hire people who can help them solve their problems. If you are a financial advisor, giving away an article on financial tips is a great way to get contact information but what you really want to do is to identify those people who have an immediate interest in your services.

Prompt people to contact you by including an inquiry form on your web site, but don’t make the mistakes made on most web sites. Too often inquiry forms are buried on the site, multiple clicks away from the pages most frequently viewed by your visitors. Include your form on high visibility pages, at the bottom of your homepage and other key pages about your services and products.

Use your inquiry form to both collect contact information and to identify the services your prospects are interested in and how you can help them. When you make your follow up calls you’ll know where to start the conversation.

When you receive completed inquiry forms you can sort through them to identify which ones are worth following up on based on the answers provided. Then pick up the phone and use these qualified leads to find new clients and grow your business.

4. Collect Feedback and Learn More About Your Prospect’s Needs

When people visit your sell pages, the web pages that describe your products and services, they’ve expressed an interest. Some will move directly to purchase, others will discover they don’t have any further interest and a large number will fall into the middle. These are people who are interested but not ready to commit.

Before visitors leave your web site sell pages, you can use exit pop up windows to collect feedback and to find out what they are looking for.

Offer a free article to motivate visitors to fill in the form. When you get these feedback forms, follow up with a call. Use this conversation to find out why they didn’t buy the service or product or to get further information about the problems they want solved. Once you have these prospects on the phone you’ll be surprised how many you can turn into clients.

5. Send out Surveys to Identify What Sells

If you have a newsletter you can leverage the trust of your readers to collect ideas of what they want to buy. If you’ve been sending out ideas and information to your target market periodically they will be more than likely to respond when you ask for their input.

Two to four times per year, send an informal survey to your subscriber base, asking for their ideas. Ask them which of your product or service ideas they like best and what they need and want. Tabulate their responses and develop the products and services they asked for.

Write Pre-Lapsed-Donor Donation Fundraising Letters Before Donors Lapse

When is the best time to recover a lapsed donor? Before they lapse. Using a “pre-lapsed donor letter.”

I heard recently of a non-profit organization that mails a special letter to all donors who are at risk of lapsing. This organization has found that pre-lapsed donor letters are effective at preventing some donors from lapsing. Here’s how you can implement a similar system for your organization.

Watch your database for donors who are approaching your lapsed-donor threshold. For most organizations, an active donor becomes a lapsed donor when that donor does not mail a gift for over 12 months. So watch your database for donors who are approaching this zone.

Run a manual query, or write a script that queries your database automatically (weekly or monthly), looking for all donors who are about to lapse. Decide how soon you want to know. In other words, decide how much notice you want to receive before donors lapse. The longer a donor has lapsed, the less likely you are to recover them again.

Running this query regularly will alert you to those active donors who are about to lapse unless you take remedial action. Flag these donors for special attention. Getting a donation from a current donors is five to eight times more cost effective than getting a donation of the same size from a stranger. So retaining your donors is vital.

Once you have a system in place for recognizing donors before they lapse, create a letter or series of steps that you will take to keep the donor active.

The most effective method of preventing donors from lapsing is a personal phone call from you. Use the phone to contact your most valuable donors. For those donors for whom a phone call would be too expensive (for you), write them a letter instead.

Craft a compelling letter that persuades these at-risk donors to renew their support. Your letter should:

  1. Acknowledge the donor’s past gifts and thank them for their support
  2. Explain that you have not heard from them for some time (give the number of months if you want)
  3. Describe in detail how much their continued support means to you and the people you serve
  4. Consider offering an incentive for them to renew their support (a book, DVD, discount, free admission, special member benefit or other attractive premium)

7 Ways Email Can End Your Business Relationships Before They Start

Too often, people forget they’re anonymous in the internet world. Your friends and colleagues might know you as being a tireless worker, a great friend and loving parent, but I don’t know that. To me, you’re just a font. You’re a font in an email, or in a forum post. If you give me access to your website, then you’re whatever impression the website creates. But largely, you’re anonymous. So if you want to establish trust in your internet business dealings, make it your goal to paint a professional image via email.

I’m a copywriter, so I’m constantly combing the web for possible clients and cohorts. Recently I’ve encountered some internet personalities who have left me scratching my head in puzzlement. Might we have had a fruitful business relationship? I’ll never know, because within days of crossing paths, they managed to display one of the “Scary Seven” - that is, the seven quickest ways to scare people away by email. Let’s review them now.

Scare Tactic 1. Send an email from a cryptic address. There’s nothing that says ‘unprofessional’ like an email inquiry from “Binky24″ or “Shanaynay_7″. Email addresses like this strike me as being one of two things: 1. someone young and foolish, or 2. a spammer. I understand if you don’t have a website up and running yet; after all, as a writer, many people contact me to help them get their businesses started. But at the very least, reveal your first and last name. Provide contact information, and a brief background. If no one knows who you are, it’s not likely they’ll do business with you.

Scare Tactic 2. Send an email that contains virtually no information. Yesterday I responded to a post on Craigslist that requested an editor. In my email, I gave my name, contact info, a little background information and directed the potential client to my website. I asked a few questions about their needs. In response, I got one line, and a very uninformative one at that. Do you see why I don’t plan to contact this person again?

Scare Tactic 3. Send too many emails! Want to make people think you have absolutely zero going on? Then send someone a barrage of email after having just met. I recently got an onslaught of emails from a potential client - NINE in total, over the course of a day. YIKES! This is a busy world. People don’t have time to pore through your information. Organize your thoughts, and send in ONE email- maybe two, max.

Scare Tactic 4. Send emails of a personal nature. Never, EVER send email jokes or personal anecdotes to someone you plan on doing business with over the internet. I don’t care how promising the initial phone conversation was or how “friendly” they seem. This behavior screams unprofessional, and can even be a bit disturbing. Many marketers swap information, and this is fine. But it should be done in moderation. There’s a fine line between helpful information exchange and email harassment. Don’t cross it.

Scare Tactic 5. Send out a group email, and forget to blind copy. I recently signed on to work for a company that contracts out writers. I liked the spirit in which business was being conducted and the site owner’s honest approach. But there is such a thing as too much honesty. The first project came through via email - and I could see the name of EVERY writer who was competing with me for work! Not only does this have trouble written all over it, but no one wants their email address shared. A Privacy Policy is the hallmark of a real business. Implement one, and assure people their information is safe with your company.

Scare Tactic 6. Send an email that you haven’t proofread. We’re all in a hurry, it’s true. But haste makes waste! If you request information on “barbecue girls,” you might just get some unexpected feedback! Double-checking your message can ensure that the recipient can respond properly. Ultimately, you’ll get an answer to the question you asked - and not one you didn’t.

Scare Tactic 7. Send an email that’s either too enthusiastic, or too austere. People are people - and I’ve encountered personalities from both ends of the spectrum. Those who are “SO EXCITED to make your acquaintance that they CAN’T STOP SHOUTING!!!!!!” and those who apparently are so wrapped up in themselves that they can’t spare a courteous hello. My advice: take the middle ground. Keep it friendly yet professional, and don’t go to extremes in your correspondence.

Don’t want to frighten people away with your email? Then avoid the “Scary Seven!” Above all, discuss the who, what, when, where, how and why of your message, and be sure to include any information that will help your future colleague get to know you better - a website link, some articles you’ve written, your resume, etc. Don’t be overly pushy on email, and avoid over- or under-communicating. In time, you’ll get the feel for the type of emails people respond to. And once that happens, you’re on your way to cultivating fruitful internet business relationships!
