Hitchhiking is a way of traveling when you are short of money or just want to experience an adventure you will never get when traveling with comfort. Both these causes lead to one result - you come on the road and try to catch a car.
Some hitchhikers know the exact point where they want to turn out to be, but some never know where and when their trip will finish.
Some piece of advice before you begin your trip.
1) If you know your destination point, you’d better to think over your route not to find yourself far away from the desired city.
2) Be extra careful, because the hitchhiking is always a risk. Take you mobile and try to be in touch with your friends or relatives (if connection allows, of course).
3) Be careful with your money - don’t store all them in one place.
4) Don’t take too much luggage - you’ll be tired very soon.
5) Take all you may need - if your route passes far from the cities you may have no chance to by all the necessary things.
6) When you travel alone the risk increases twice - so, may be it’s better to have a fellow traveler. There are a lot clubs and communities of hitchhikers (for example, in Internet) where you not only can find a fellow traveler but also receive a useful advise.
What attracts people in hitchhiking is the feeling of freedom and the opportunity to have the real adventure. It’s a challenge in some way and some people like to accept it. Some hitchhikers like to have a chance to meet new people and to make friends.
Of course, sometimes such meetings are not exiting at all - the boring drivers desiring to describe you their whole lives is the least of the problems. Everybody knows the proverb - don’t talk to the strangers. It has sense because some of them are really dangerous. If you are locked up in a car with such a person, the best thing is to use your gas spray can and to clear out of the car. So, don’t forget to include your aerosol in list of the necessary things.
Although the hitchhiking is supposed to be free of charge, be ready to pay sometimes. May be the only driver going in your direction will not intend to pick up you for free.
Speaking about the best routs for hitchhiking - it’s Europe and the United States. The reason? The highways are better, the traffic is intensive and you surely get to the point in a short time. As for where to stay for the night - the real hitchhiker tries not to stay in the hotels of even in campings. He or she would prefer to stay on the nature or the house of the local inhabitant.
Now the hitchhiking has become some kind of sport - and there are some competitions in this field. The aim is to achieve some point in the shortest time and not to pay for it. On TV there are even some shows, devoting to hitchhiking. Its popularity increases. Why? The suggestion is that people are fed up with their comfortable lives and like to feel the adrenaline and to participate in an adventure. As far as the West concerned, it’s true, but as it was said in the beginning, some choose this way of traveling just because they have no money.

I’m blogging from the airport, on my way back from two days of meetings in Cordoba.
We’ve been here to meet a small start up company that we’re investing in; they’re mining zinc from the regions close to the Guadalquivir River. The business is an offshoot of a big corporation based in Madrid, but these guys have set up a semi-independent department here in Andaluca, hiring local labourers and buying equipment from a factory that’s only about 100 miles away. Getting permission to mine in the region has been a bit of a headache for the group - parts of Cordoba are protected from exploitation and mining, which is just as well given the history of the area. The guide book in the hotel said that 10th century remains of Muslim temples have been found here, and that there are still a fair amount of Roman remains being discovered. Anyhow, these guys have secured a permit to begin exploring new regions outside the city, to assess their mining potential.
Our interest in these guys started last year when I was sitting on the Strategy Panel, and working on our five-year-plan. We identified a number of potential growth industries that we were not investing in at the time, and one was metals. Manufacturers are using more metal than ever at the moment - mostly driven by the massively accelerating demand for consumer goods in the Far East. Zinc is the fourth most popular metal in manufacturing, and it often gets overlooked as people focus on aluminium and copper. However, it’s vital in the process of galvanising steel, but it’s also used in things like anti-dandruff shampoo and various paints. Plus - if you’ve ever had a pocketful of American change, you probably wouldn’t have realised that the 1 cent coin is made from zinc!
So, we got a lot done over the last few days, but I’ll definitely be back here soon. Cordoba is a beautiful town, and I’d like to see more of it - I’ll try and bring the family along next time and stay for a few days. The staff at The Califa said that there’s an antique market just round the corner from the Hotel, so it definitely won’t take much to persuade the wife to spend a few days out here!

If you like wine, stop at the Door Peninsula Winery in Carlsville, Wisconsin the next time you get to Door County. The winery is north of Sturgeon Bay on Hwy 42. It is located in an old schoolhouse.
My husband, one of my grown sons, and myself stopped there during a recent trip to Door County. The evening before we had dined at Shipwrecked in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin (also in Door County), and had been given a coupon for a free tour of the winery and free wine tasting. It seemed like too good of a deal to pass up.
Even if you don’t have a coupon for the tour, it’s a bargain at $2 for each adult. And if you’re not interested in the tour but just in the wine tasting, the wine tasting is free to anyone 21 years of age or older.
We decided to take the tour and then taste some of the wines. The tour started in the front of the schoolhouse where our guide told us the building had been used as a schoolhouse for 100 years, from 1868 to 1968. At one point in time, the school had 60 students in 8 grades with only 2 teachers. The building was purchased and turned into a winery in 1974.
After being given some history on the building, we were taken to the basement of the building, which is where the wine is made. We saw how the wine was bottled, the vats it is made in, along with the barrels it is stored in for aging. Along the way we learned how the fruit juice the winery uses gets turned into wine. Then we headed back upstairs to the wine bar to start tasting the wines.
With over 50 wines being produced by the winery, it was difficult deciding which ones to try but we managed. The winery produces quite a few fruit wines from apple to blackberry to plum to cranberry to peach to strawberry, along with their signature cherry wine which is made with Door County cherries. The fruits for some of the other wines come from other places, such as California, but all the wine is made at the Door County facility.
The top selling wines at the Door County winery are the Strawberry Zinfandel, Blackberry Merlot, and Razzle Dazzle Raspberry. Our favorites were the Blackberry, Cranberry, and Sparkling Razzle Dazzle Raspberry. Other wines we liked included the Port Reserve, a sweet desert wine; Sweet Cherry, a sweet wine; White Christmas, one of the winery’s holiday wines; the White Zinfandel, one of the winery’s signature series wines; and Cranbernet, a wine made with a combination of cranberry and grape juices.
The winery also offers several non-wine products including cherry juice, sparkling juices, wine jellies, gourmet mustards, and Door Peninsula Wine Cheese Spread which we thought was so good that we bought two containers to take home.
The large shopping area in the winery also has hundreds of other items for sale including wine glasses, wine racks, gourmet foods, gift baskets, and wine butlers.
In addition to taking home some of the winery’s cheese spread; we bought a mixed case of wine to take with us. And we didn’t break the bank buying the wine. The wines at the winery are a good value. The wines start at around $8 for the fruit wines to a little under $30 for some of the winery’s signature series wines.
We enjoyed the couple of hours we spent at the Door Peninsula Winery. It was a fun way to spend part of our afternoon during our trip to Door County. During our next trip we plan to visit some of the other wineries in Door County to see what they have to offer.
